3 definitions of fishless cycling.
Process by which you add bottled bacteria solutions or seasoned filter media as well as pure ammonia (cheap..plain... non scented... non sudsy ammonia) to your tank to simulate a fish load in your tank so that your tank completes the nitrogen cycle without fish in it. This allows you to add fish in a very very short time period instead of gradually adding them a few at a time.

Per 10 gallons you add a specific number of drops of ammonia to help cycle the tank. The amount needed is whatever it takes to register about 5 ppm on an ammonia test kit. Continue to add ammonia at the determined amount daily until you register nitrite. Once you register nitrite reduce the amount in half.
To calculate the amount you need: 1) Determine the percentage of ammonia in the bottle you have if it is available printed on the bottle. 2)If you cannot find it you will need to count drops, wait for it to mix in and then test the ammonia ppm to see if you have enough or not to register 5 ppm. 3) If you can find the percentage on the bottle use it as a whole number (28% = 28, 10% = 10, 4% = 4) in the following formula ((140/Percent_Solution)/10)*Gallons_In_Tank = Drops to add to your tank. FYI 20 drops is approximately 1 milliliter for easier measurement. For liquid conversions see LittleFishTank.com's Liquid Calculator 4) Continue to add ammonia daily in the orignal amount you calculated until you register Nitrite. 5) After you register Nitrite reduce the ammonia you add daily to 1/2 that does. 6)Continue to add ammonia daily at the full dose until you register no Nitrite in the tank. 7) Once you reach no nitrite you can maintain the cycle by adding between a quarter to half of the full dose daily per 10 gallons of the ammonia. 8) Once you are ready to add fish stop adding ammonia and wait 24 hours. Perform a test to ensure 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite. If you register 0 on both tests drain 50% of the water. Top off the tank after adding dechlorinator to the water you are adding. DO NOT USE AMQUEL or other chemical tha treats ammonia. Chemicals for dechlor must only be for removing chlorine and chloramines. If it treats ammonia this will destabilize your fishless cycle at this early stage.
NOTE: If the bottle says Pure Ammonia or 100% Ammonia this does not mean it has 100% ammonia in the bottle. This simply is to indicate that it does not have suds creating chemicals in it. It does NOT mean it's 100% for the formula above. Household ammonia typically is in the 4-10% range but you need to be sure it does not have other things in it (shake it... if no foam on top then it likely does not have a sudsing agent in it)
